The Customer Journey starts in AI Search

There was a time when customers called first. They had a casting problem, a difficult part, a design question, or a material challenge. They picked up the phone and asked your foundry,Can you help us with this?

Those times are changing. Today, many customers don’t start with a phone call. They start with ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, or Google AI. They ask what a process is. They ask which casting method is suitable. They ask how one process compares to another. They ask what the design rules are. They ask which suppliers exist. And then the AI gives them an answer.

AI search gives conclusions, not only links

This is the big shift. Traditional search gave customers links. AI search gives customers conclusions. Instead of opening ten different websites and building their own understanding, customers now receive a structured explanation in seconds. The AI summarizes, compares, filters, and often points them toward specific technologies or companies.

That means the buying journey starts before the customer ever reaches your website. For foundries and suppliers, this is critical. It is no longer enough to be technically excellent. It is no longer enough to be known by the old customer base. If AI systems do not understand what you do, where you are strong, and why your process matters, you are invisible to new customers.

Being known by the old market is not enough

This is especially dangerous in the foundry industry because many companies have never needed marketing. RFQs arrived through established relationships and OEM portals. Customers knew who to call. The supplier list was already defined.

But new customers do not always know that list. Engineers in emerging industries, startup teams, purchasing departments, and product developers may not know much about casting. They may not know which process is suitable. They may not know which suppliers are capable. So they ask AI.

If your competitor is mentioned in that answer and you are not, the first position in the customer’s mind may already be lost to the competition.

AI can educate your customer before the first call

AI search also changes the quality of the sales conversation. When a customer reaches out after being educated by AI, they often arrive with better questions. They already understand the basics. They know the process advantages, limitations, cost drivers, and alternatives. The early education phase has already happened. That is a major advantage.

If your content helped educate that customer, trust is already forming before the first call. The customer feels that they know your thinking. They have seen your explanations. They have learned from your articles, podcasts, videos, or technical content. You are no longer just one supplier in a list. You are the company that helped them understand the problem.

This is why AI visibility is not only a marketing topic. It is a sales topic. It is a trust topic. It is a business development topic.

Outdated knowledge creates bad decisions

There is also a technical responsibility here. AI systems can only work with the knowledge they can access. If the casting industry does not publish up-to-date, practical, and technically correct information, AI tools rely on old textbooks, generic content, or outdated explanations. Then customers will make decisions based on weak information.

That is bad for suppliers, but it is also bad for the industry. If we want customers to understand casting better, we need to explain casting better. We need to publish content that answers real questions. We need to explain processes, applications, costs, design rules, limitations, and comparisons in a way that both humans and AI systems can use.

SEO still matters, but the goal has changed

Classic SEO still matters, but the game has changed. SEO was about ranking in Google. AI search is about becoming part of the answer. The goal is not only to be found as a link. The goal is to be trusted, summarized, cited, and recommended.

That means foundries need to stop hiding their knowledge in dusty brochures or PDF downloads. They need to turn their expertise into indexed, readable, useful content.

Being the best supplier is not enough if the customer never discovers you.

The choice: vanish or conquer

The foundry industry has a choice. It can wait and hope that old relationships continue to bring enough work. Or it can actively shape the answers that future customers receive. Because if AI cannot find your foundry, your future customers may not find you either.
