Plasma Cutting for HPDC foundries

In podcast episode 28, sponsored by Hypertherm Inc., we discuss the advantages of plasma cutting in HPDC foundries compared to traditional trim presses. Plasma cutting offers several key benefits, particularly regarding flexibility, cost, and space efficiency.

  1. Flexibility and Design: Plasma cutting allows for greater manipulation of parts during the degating process, allowing engineers to design without being constrained by the limitations of a horizontal or vertical trim press. Parts can be moved around the torch, or the torch can be adjusted around the part, which leads to more optimized and innovative designs.

  2. Reduced Capital Costs: Trim presses, especially for large parts or multi-cavity moulds, require substantial machinery and tooling investments. Plasma cutting, on the other hand, involves lower capital costs and avoids the need for frequent tool changes and maintenance, making it a more cost-effective solution.

  3. Space Efficiency: Trim presses can take up considerable floor space, requiring larger presses as part sizes increase. Plasma cutting systems are more compact and scalable, allowing for better use of factory floor space.

  4. Collaboration Potential: While plasma cutting can stand alone, it can also be used alongside trim presses to improve overall productivity. For instance, plasma can cut parts to a near-net shape, using the trim press for final finishing. This synergy between the two systems enhances efficiency and reduces the overall workload on the trim press.

  5. Maintenance and Uptime: Plasma cutting systems are more reliable and easier to maintain than trim presses, and they are known for frequent downtimes due to tool changes. The ease of switching out a plasma torch or power source boosts uptime and reduces operational interruptions.

Overall, plasma cutting provides HPDC foundries with a more versatile, cost-effective, and space-efficient solution than traditional trim presses with their individual trimming tools, making it a valuable alternative for modern manufacturing environments.
